The city of Murcia is less than a 20 minute drive away, and Cartagena about 30 minutes.  Murcia is well worth a visit for its beautiful cathedral and quaint alleyways with designer boutiques and talented street musicians.  It also has a theatre and a concert hall both of which host international performances.

For the best value food, try some of the numerous restaurants and cafes especially in the sea-side towns.  Many offer a ‘Menu del Día’ of 3 courses including wine for typically €10 - €12  (£8 - £10).  Another ‘must’ to try are ‘tapas’ - a selection of portions of delicious local meat or seafood dishes chosen from a display in most bars and cafes, to share among your group.  Typically €3 to €5 per portion.

Cartagena has a picturesque port, a Roman amphitheatre and many attractive squares.  Both cities feature periodic processions and displays, based on religious festivals and historic events of local importance.  Torrevieja and Alicante also have theatres within easy reach.  Every town in the area has a weekly market which give local flavour and some excellent bargains!  Try the San Pedro market on Mondays from around 10am to 2pm.
